TH ENVIOROMENTAL CRITERIA
Under Decision 2002/272/CE of March 2002, the European Commission adopted a series of criteria for the award of Eco-label to the ‘hard floor-coverings’ category, which include ceramic tiles. The ‘hard floor-coverings’ product group comprises all hard products for internal/external flooring use, without any relevant structural function:

natural products:
marble, granite and other natural stones

processed products
- hardened products: agglomerated stones,
concrete paving units and terrazzo tiles
- fired products: ceramic tiles and clay tiles.

Environmental criteria are associated with the product life cycle, with special focus on activities having major impact. In particular, they aim to promote:

The reduction of the impact of raw materials
extraction on habitats;
The rational use of the relevant resources;
The reduction of energy consumption during production;
The reduction of the release of toxic or polluting substances
into the environment;
The reduction of the use of dangerous substances,
thereby minimising the environmental impact;
The management and recovery of wastewater during production.

Moreover, the use of the label in the marketing phase will provide information to consumers, especially on:

the release of dangerous substances;
the reaction to fire;
fitness for use.
