What is meant by ‘sustainable building construction’
In terms of consumption of resources and production of waste, the construction area represents one of the economic sectors with the greatest impact. Buildings contribute enormously to the emission of greenhouse gases both during the construction phase and, more importantly, in terms of the energy bill for their use and maintenance. As such the design of buildings and cities plays an important role in attenuating the phenomena tied to climactic changes.
Sustainable construction refers to a building or infrastructure that has a minimal impact on the environment - natural or edified - in which it is located. In order to evaluate this impact one considers the construction itself and its surroundings but also the greater regional and global picture. The entire life cycle (LCA) of the building is examined, evaluating its environmental and functional qualities as values for the future. Certain basic rules must be accepted in order to build in a sustainable manner: (a) minimise the consumption of non-renewable resources; (b) contribute to reinforcing the natural environment; (c) minimise or eliminate the dispersion of toxic substances.
