AWARDS & TENDERS
The international tender of architecture and industrial design “Design for all: build for a real use” 2003-2004, is a programme full of initiatives which aims to raise awareness among designers and manufacturers on the problems caused by an inflexible or inadequate design: “Objects and buildings constructed specifically for disabilities”, the organisers write, “often create a psychological barrier to their use because they emphasize the diversity feeling that is itself a barrier to remove. On the contrary, solutions fully integrated in the building enhance it and make it available for a real use.”

To celebrate its 25th anniversary, Adaptive Environments, Inc., a US educational non profit organization, in collaboration with the BOSTON SOCIETY OF ARCHITECTS AND the AIA NEW YORK CHAPTER recently launched “Excellence in Universal Design - Great Places Fit for People” This new design awards program will recognize building projects which reflect the principles of universal design, anticipate human needs (e.g., indoor air quality, lighting, acoustics, navigation) and both integrate and exceed minimal US accessibility requirements.
