EVENTS/INITIATIVES
The tenth anniversary of the EU Eco-label was celebrated on the 1 and 2 December 2002 in Brussels. Since 1992, the introductory year, the European initiative has grown to cover 21 different product categories, involving 125 companies (27 of which are Italian). Perhaps not an entirely satisfactory outcome, but rather than the figures themselves (which are still modest), the EU institutions find greater value in the message that the future lies with eco-friendly products, the only items able to bring together economic development with environmental sustainability.

During CERSAIE 2002, the Bologna Centro Ceramico, in co-operation with Assopiastrelle, sponsored the seminar, La certificazione ambientale di prodotto (ECOLABEL) per le piastrelle di ceramica [Eco-label, the product environmental certification, for ceramic tiles]. Many representatives from various institutions, industry and design attended the event.

The March 2002 issue of The Flower, the EU Eco-label official newsletter, enthusiastically reported the significant participation of representatives of the ceramic tile industry at the conference entitled Ecological criteria to get the Eco-label for hard-floor-coverings, held in Bologna on 23 March 2002, within the section dedicated to ‘bio-ecological’ materials of NATURPOLIS-SAIEDUE.

The EU Eco-label web site has launched a new section dedicated to marketing activities. Companies that have been awarded the label and other interested organisations can download promotional materials for marketing their products and brochures on the Eco-label scheme. Reports and marketing studies carried out by the Commission and by the national competent bodies, together with all the working documents of the Marketing Management Group, are also available for download.
