HOW TO BE AWARDED ECOLABEL
Four steps towards the awarding of the label:

1. Submission of the application: after producers or distributors submits an Eco-label application for a product in one of the categories for which Eco-label criteria have been specified, the Italian Eco-label Organisation proceeds to evaluate the certificates and fulfilment of the criteria.

2. Awarding of the label for ecological quality: the Competent Body authorises the use of the label on the product and in the product’s advertising upon payment of an annual fee for the right to use the label. This fee is 0.15% of the annual turnover of the labelled product within the EU. SMEs with an EMAS or ISO 14001 certification are eligible for discounts, as are companies from developing countries.

3. Compliance monitoring: the Competent Body will monitor compliance of the product with the product's ecological criteria in order to assure consumers that the product continues to reflect environmental excellence.

4. Product promotion: promotion of the labelled product is encouraged through supporting measures provided by the national Competent Body.
