“Sustainable Consumption: A Global Status Report”, published in September 2002 by the UNITED NATIONS ENVIRONMENT PROGRAMME – DIVISION OF TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY AND ECONOMY (UNEP-DTIE) is an overview of action and thinking on the issue of SC since the publication of Agenda 21 in 1992. In addition to carrying out consumer trend studies focusing on global consumers and youth, supported by the advertising and communications industry, UNEP has also been reviewing the implementation of a set of “Consumer Protection Guidelines” specifically related to SC.

The OECD (ORGANISATION FOR ECONOMIC COOPERATION AND DEVELOPMENT) publication, “Towards Sustainable Household Consumption? Trends and Policies”, is about the day-to-day actions of households in OECD countries and how these actions affect the environment. Presenting trends in five key areas of household consumption (food, tourism travel, energy, water and waste generation) it shows how environmental impacts from household activities have grown over the last three decades and are expected to intensify over the next twenty years, particularly in the areas of energy, transport and waste.

CONSUMER LABELLING INITIATIVE an EPA voluntary, cooperative effort to foster pollution prevention and strengthen the consumer’s power of choice by stimulating the use of ecological labels on products.

The independent, international Oxford-based Commission on Sustainable Consumption (OCEES) aims to act as a catalyst and facilitator for action by governments, businesses, the media and others for a shift towards SC. The Commission is concentrating its efforts in the three areas of consumption with the greatest environmental impact: transport, food and housing.
