EVENTS/IITIATIVES
WORLDWIDE - GREEN BUILDING CHALLENGE (GBC) is a consortium of over 20 countries that is developing and testing a new method of assessing the environmental performance of buildings across national boundaries. The assessment is framed by a software application called GB Tool, which allows input for a full description of the building’s environmental performance, and measures it against regional benchmarks.

EUROPE - E-CORE - EUROPEAN CONSTRUCTION RESEARCH NETWORK: an interesting, forthcoming EU initiative. It will act as an ‘umbrella network’ for other thematic networks in the construction sector. Some of these have already been set up and others are expected to follow. Current thematic networks which specifically address environmental and sustainability issues are: ETN Recy.net (promoting the use of recycled materials as aggregates in the construction industry); PRESCO (see below); DURANET (supporting the development and application of performance based durability, design and assessment of concrete structures); ENERBUILD (Energy in the built environment); CRISP (see below).

CRISP – CONSTRUCTION AND CITY RELATED SUSTAINABILITY INDICATORS (EC Proposal 1999-2002). CRISP aims to co-ordinate through a Thematic Network, research work which defines, validates and implements indicators measuring the sustainability of cities, construction projects (buildings and built environment) in cities and the progress of activities dealing with creating and maintaining them at the national level. These indicators will be used to compare the sustainability of individual buildings, large groups of buildings, urban areas and construction activities at city, region and country level.
