NATURAL RESOURCES USE: EXTRACTION AND PRODUCTION
Ceramic tiles can be considered a low environmental impact material, especially when compared to other floor and wall coverings. This positive evaluation takes into account the different phases of the entire Life cycle of tiles from the mining of raw materials (the ‘cradle’), through buildings (and coverings), to its final disposal or re-use in the environment (the ‘grave’).

Ceramic tiles are obtained by raw materials widely available in the earth's crust, especially clay, feldspar and quartz. They are non-renewable materials even though they are not of strategic interest, like fossil fuels for example. Although quality requirements differ according to the type of product and manufacturing technology, they never require or justify particularly expensive or environmentally harmful operations of separation or enhancement in the extraction phase.
