EVENTS/INITIATIVES
WORLDWIDE - At the WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM on 31 January 1999, the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan challenged business leaders to join a new international initiative – the Global Compact – that would bring companies together with UN agencies, labour and civil society to support nine principles in the areas of human rights, labour and the environment. Through the power of collective action, the GLOBAL COMPACT seeks to advance responsible corporate citizenship so that business can be part of the solution to the challenges of globalisation. A coalition of governments, businesses and public interest groups launched a global campaign in April 2002 to encourage companies to issue public reports on their impact on society and the environment. The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is aimed at elevating such ‘non-financial reporting’ to the same level as the reports that public companies around the world periodically issue on their financial health. The GRI guidelines are already being followed by more than 110 companies worldwide. To ensure continual improvement of the GRI Guidelines, a structured feedback process (SFP) will be in place by the end of June 2003. The purpose of the SFP is to review the 2002 Guidelines with the objective of issuing new and improved guidelines in 2005.

BUSINESS AND SOCIAL INITIATIVES DATABASE (BASI) includes comprehensive information on private sector initiatives which address labour and social conditions in the workplace and in the communities where enterprises operate. The database features corporate policies and reports, codes of conduct, accreditation and certification criteria, and labelling and other programmes. The ETHIBEL SUSTAINABILITY INDEX (ESI) provides a comprehensive perspective for institutional investors, asset managers, banks and retail investors on the financial performance of the world's leading companies in terms of sustainability. The ETHIBEL SUSTAINABILITY INDEX (ESI) groups four regional indexes: ESI GLOBAL, ESI AMERICAS, ESI EUROPE and ESI ASIA PACIFIC. BUSINESS FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (BSR) is a global nonprofit organisation that helps member companies achieve commercial success in ways that respect ethical values, people, communities and the environment. Founded in 1978, the CENTER FOR ETHICAL BUSINESS CULTURES (CEBC - formerly known as the Minnesota Center for Corporate Responsibility) is a non-profit business association that assists leaders in creating ethical and profitable business cultures at the enterprise, community and global levels.
