“S_TILES - Italian tiles towards sustainability”, a new integrated environmental and social communication strategy created by Assopiastrelle comprises a new website and book (in Italian and English), seminars and meetings with the various stakeholders. The initiative was supported by ICE (Italian Institute for Foreign Trade) and the Italian Ministry of Productive Activities and coordinated by EOS Environmental Consulting Group.
The first appointment is at Coverings in Orlando on 23 March, where the new website will be officially unveiled to a selected audience of architects and interior designers. The meeting is entitled: “Designing Responsibility“. A global approach to promote sustainable building: the role of Italian ceramic tiles”.

The “S_TILES” initiative fulfils the need of Assopiastrelle for an effective environmental and social communication strategy that goes beyond a purely technical or promotional project. The aim of the initiative is to raise awareness of the tile sector’s strategic approach to concrete application of the principles of sustainable development, taking account of all components of this development, whether environmental, social or economic. The program of action for sustainable construction set up by the European Commission in 2000, the hard floor coverings eco-label of 2002, which applies to ceramic tiles, the Directive on energy efficiency of buildings (2003) and the recent initiatives on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) are just a few of the aspects of a broader community strategy focused on introducing sustainable development into the building sector.

Over the past twenty years, through environment protection policies and in particular measures for increasing energy efficiency, the Italian ceramic industry has succeeded in improving the quality of its globally marketed products and enhancing its prestige amongst the parties most sensitive to the issues of sustainable development, namely policy-
